Technical Specification sheet

The Iron Roughneck is an integrated hydraulic tubular handling machine installed on drill floors, designed to automate the make-up and break-out of threaded connections for oilfield tubular goods, including drill string components, tools, packers, couplings, and valves. It replaces risky manual operations with chain tongs and manual power tongs, becoming core mechanized equipment for modern automated drilling rigs. The complete iron roughneck system mainly consists of a drill pipe spinner unit, high-torque wrenching tong, heavy-duty clamping jaws, hydraulic power system and optional electric control mode and pneumatic “intelligent” control mode. The spinner completes high-speed thread spinning, while the wrenching tong applies precise final make-up torque and breakout torque. Equipped with multi-position self-centering jaws, it can stably grip various tubulars without damaging pipe bodies and tool joint threads. All operations can be realized via driller cabin integrated control, wired local panel or wireless remote control. Ancillary features include the PF, PS, PA2.1 and other automated tong positioning systems, which greatly increase productivity by providing the means to work offline to makeup and breakout drill bits and bottom hole assemblies clear of the rotary table and out of the critical path.

The modular design of the iron roughneck system simplifies daily inspection, maintenance and component replacement, lowering long-term operating costs. The iron roughneck system have reliable performance under harsh working conditions, resisting vibration, mud contamination, high humidity and wide temperature variation. And it's compact structural layout, flexible installation modes, make it adaptable to land drilling rigs, jack-up rigs, semi-submersible platforms and drillships with limited drill floor space.

Application

  • Running drill pipe, tripping standard- or premium-connection drill pipe, offline stand building, and bit breaking
  • In conjunction with an optional PF2 and PF3 positioning device
  • Bottom hole assembly makeup and installation
  • Hydraulic system pressure 3, 000 psi
  • Three-jaw gripping system enables equal load distribution and easy jaw and die exchange, eliminating shear forces on tool joints and reducing backup clamping pressure while spinning
  • In conjunction with an optional PS and PA positioning device
  • Support on stabbing guide and tool joint finder for remote control all-in-one version
  • Adaptable to open-center and closed-center hydraulic supply system
  • Land drilling rigs
  • Free-floating spinning system follows the movement of pipe, protecting the tool joint and minimizing drill pipe damage caused by conventional systems
  • Jack-up drilling rigs
  • Support on automated thread cleaning and doping for remote control all-in-one version
  • Drillships
  • Support on automated mud bucket for remote control all-in-one version
  • Semi-submersible drilling platforms
